A Christmas dinner would never be complete without a cracker. But where did the come from?
Tom Smith was born in 1823 in Surry where he began working in a bakery and confectionary shop in London at the age of 7. Over the years he became a master of his trade and spent his spare time making new designs and ideas. He opened his first shop in the 1840s.
Tom travelled to Paris in 1846 and came across a French 'Bonbon', a sugared almond in a twist of tissue paper. He took this back to England where the concept was popular at Christmas time. In 1849 he started swapping out Bonbons for gifts and trinkets. Adding the snap element in 1860
